MAY SALIDA COUNCIL FOR THE ARTS CREATIVE MIXER

(SALIDA, Colorado) — The Salida Council for the Arts (SCFTA) invites the public to attend the monthly Creative Mixer at the Salida SteamPlant in the Paquette Gallery on Thursday, May 9 from 5:30-7:00 pm featuring entertainment by musician Jason Thies and a retrospective art show by the late artist Ted Fish.

Held every second Thursday, the Creative Mixer is a free monthly public gathering of those interested in knowing more about the local arts scene in a casual social setting. Anyone with information to share about upcoming creative and art-related events is encouraged to give a brief announcement. Attendees are welcomed to introduce themselves and may find new friends and collaborators at the “Mixer.” Free hors’ de oeuvres, a cash bar, beautiful artwork, great conversation, and music are always in abundance.

Artist Ted Fish drew his inspiration from cultures around the world and interpreted them for the contemporary viewer. Over 20 years ago, Ted realized that if he did not start creating art, he never would; thus, began his experimentation with clay. After receiving a BFA with a concentration in ceramics, he began sculpting heads in clay, stone, and concrete, and painting in acrylic and watercolor.

All of his work resulted from his interest in the power of primitive and ancient art and how such art connects the contemporary, meditative and contemplative mind. Images from 30,000 years of art in places throughout the world, such as Egypt, South America, Africa, and Polynesia, are connected with real life experiences. Sculpting and painting objects allowed him to find in an interior space, a response beyond the intellect, an emotional reaction.  For him it was created life out of nothing.

Jason Thies is a guitarist, singer and songwriter based out of Durango, Colorado. Since 1999 he has released 4 albums of original music-2 of which (People Places Possibilities & Grey Matters) are available through iTunes and Spotify. Recently his music was aptly described:

“…it is excellent; a wonderfully rootsy, bluesy, and exuberantly hook-filled sound.”

Twin Vision

Thies has been a member of The Assortment for 14 years along with Jeff Haspel and Michael Mixter. The band plays a wide variety of popular songs from the 1930’s on into the 21st century, as well as many original compositions. Percussionist Kim Heikens left the band in 2017, and the remaining members have regrouped with vocalist Patrice DeLorenzo. They continue to play their eclectic mix of tunes throughout the 4 Corners.

Jason also performs solo and, for two years, appeared weekly at the Far View Lodge in Mesa Verde National Park. He has lived in Austin, TX and Nashville, TN-performing at many popular venues that include The Bluebird Cafe, Cactus Cafe, Douglas Corner, The Hideout, Ruta Maya, Hotel Indigo and others. Currently he is writing and recording songs for his 5th album. To hear his music and learn about upcoming shows, visit…
