The Salida Council for the Arts (SCFTA) invites the public to attend the monthly Creative Mixer at the Salida SteamPlant in the Paquette Gallery on Thursday, June 13 from 5:30-7:00 pm featuring entertainment by musician Jasper Lau. Artists Janice Reich, Steve Schmidt and Patti Vincent are the featured artists.
ABOUT CREATIVE MIXER: Held every second Thursday, the Creative Mixer is a free monthly public gathering of those interested in knowing more about the local arts scene in a casual social setting. Anyone with information to share about upcoming creative and art-related events is encouraged to give a brief announcement. Attendees are welcomed to introduce themselves and may find new friends and collaborators at the “Mixer.” Free hors’ de oeuvres, a cash bar, beautiful artwork, great conversation, and music are always in abundance.
FEATURED MUSICIAN: Jasper Rose Lau, one of the two Salida Council for the Arts high school scholarship recipients, will be pursuing a piano performance major out of the University of Denver’s Lamont School of Music this fall. Her love for music began at age six with classical piano lessons. Countless recitals and performances later, she’s expanded her musical passion into ten other instruments. She has sung the national anthem at school events, performed with Salida Rock School, sang and played with Salida Circus, and held multiple lead roles in community musicals. Aside from music, Jasper enjoys a plethora of other hobbies with family and friends; however, she has mostly focused her interests on the arts.
FEATURED ARTISTS:Gourd artist, Janice Reich, began her journey into art later in life, but with a BAM! In 2002, in San Francisco, CA she encountered her first gourd, a Mayan drum. It was love at first sight….and sound. After seeing a number of other musical instruments and art objects made from gourds her interest grew in this odd, dried plant. Fascinated at all the different aspects of how a gourd can be transformed, she started her education through books and classes. She believes you can never stop learning. Janice is proud to offer a unique art form from such a natural medium. She works out of her studio in Mancos, Colorado, across from the majesty of Mesa Verde National Park.
Artist Steve Schmidt was raised in Colorado Springs. Since receiving a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of Colorado Denver, he has spent his days living and painting in Summit County and Los Angeles, and currently calls Salida home. His work mainly focuses on the varying landscapes between the Pacific Ocean and the Continental Divide.
For artist Patti Vincent, painting began as a means of surrounding herself with oil paintings. Adult education classes and workshops felt like they were missing the fundamentals. True joy came after being afforded the opportunity to pursue a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. Never had she worked so hard or enjoyed learning so much. Drawing became a foundation and daily passion. Oil painting and relief printmaking became studio practices. Earning a BFA from Wright State University in Dayton, OH, Summa Cum Laude, sparked a seemingly endless quest to see great art and the motivation to create art that forms a connection. Her studio practice includes oil, gouache, relief printmaking, drawing, and teaching.
