“Three years come hell or high water.” That was written into the commitment that Geraldine Alexander and jeweler Michael Boyd made to cultureclash when they opened the gallery June 6, 1996. Since then there has certainly been a little high water and some significant changes to the business, but it has been heaven.
One of the major changes came early in 1998 when the gallery moved to its current location, 101 North F St., at the stoplight, in downtown Salida. They were fearful that their client base wouldn’t follow them. Not only did their client base follow, but the location helped them develop an even greater clientele.
The other change took place about a decade ago when Michael moved to Pueblo and Geraldine became the sole owner of cultureclash. They are still very supportive of each other; Michael continues to show his work in the gallery and can always be found there when he makes his way to Salida and when the Colorado Metalsmithing Association holds its All Members Show at the gallery during the Annual Salida Conference in July of each year.
The gallery has always had an operating art studio in the back, which originally housed Michael Boyd’s Studio, followed by Todd Tychewicz, Ryan O’Brien, and Nicole Hansen. It is currently, happily, home to the studios of jeweler, Rynn Miller, and painter and tango artist, Dvora Kanegis.
The gallery has long featured contemporary, innovative work on the walls, eclectic three dimensional pieces around, and some of the finest artisan studio jewelry to be found.
Surviving three years was one goal; helping Salida and the gallery become a destination for art lovers was another goal. Both goals have been well met. Geraldine and Michael are proud of their role in making this happen, and Geraldine continues in her role with the art acquisition committee at the hospital, as chair for the public art commission, and as general advocate for the artists and the art scene in the valley.
This will be the gallery’s 20th winter holiday season, so drop by Saturday, December 12th, 4-7pm, see fresh work by many of Salida’s beloved artists and share a glass of holiday cheer.
Look for a special celebration this summer when cultureclash marks its official 20th anniversary.
